Taking That ‘First’ Step Into a 12-Step Meeting

Taking That ‘First’ Step Into a 12-Step Meeting

For many people living with an alcohol and/or substance use disorder, one of the hardest hurdles is simply walking through the door to their first 12-step meeting. It’s a moment that is filled with fear, uncertainty, and often a heavy does of self-doubt. While at the same time, providing a grain of hope.

You may wonder: Will I be judged? Will people look at me differently? Do I even belong here? These feelings are normal––and they’re shared by countless others who have sat in the parking lot, hands on the steering wheel, mustering up the courage to walk inside.

Nevertheless, here’s the truth: once that first step is taken, many discover something they didn’t expect–– relief. Inside, people find warmth, understanding, and acceptance from others who have walked that same path. They realize they’re not alone. They hear stories that sound familiar. They see hope reflected back at them in the eyes of others who have made it through the same struggles.

The rewards of entering that room can be life changing. Connection replaces isolation. Courage grows where fear once lived. And step by step, people begin to rebuild their lives with the support of a community that truly understands.
